Student/Faculty Interaction Grants Program

The Student/Faculty Interaction Program was established over a decade ago in response to research that shows the more contact students have with faculty, the more likely they will persist in school and graduate. This award-winning program provides funds to faculty for various activities with students outside the classroom, allowing participants to interact in a more social setting and thereby reducing students' feelings of intimidation.

When students see faculty as approachable, caring individuals, boundaries disappear; opportunities for discussion about issues pertinent to their own lives are created. In previous years, faculty members have hosted trips, get-togethers at faculty homes, nights at the opera, and a wealth of other activities.

Assessment of the program conducted by the Dean of Students Office revealed students who were involved with the S/FI Grant program felt that they became more actively involved in their academic work, were more likely to take advantage of faculty members’ office hours, and had a greater ability to connect their course curriculum to experiences outside of the classroom.

The division of Student Affairs would like to gratefully acknowledge the generosity of The University of Arizona Parents and Family Association. Through its support of the Student/Faculty Interaction grants program, hundreds of UA students are receiving an enhanced educational experience.

All applications will be evaluated by the following criteria:

  1. The quality of interaction likely to occur between students and faculty as a result of the program.
  2. Faculty and/or graduate teaching assistants with grading responsibilities must initiate or sponsor the proposals. Non-academic units may submit proposals with a faculty co-sponsor.
  3. Interdisciplinary events between academic departments are encouraged.
  4. Because of fiscal constraints, speaker honoraries or travel funding for guest speakers will not be funded.

As you apply, please keep in mind:

  • The maximum amount awarded is $500;
  • Priority will be given to professors who teach introductory courses;
  • Freshmen and new transfers have top priority;
  • Underclassman over upperclassman; and
  • Undergraduate over graduate.
